Matt Ouwinga began bonsai at the age of 15. When he was 21 years old, after several years of continued growth in bonsai and after taking several bonsai classes, Matt went on a visit to Japan with Bill Valavanis. At that time, Matt knew he needed to study bonsai in Japan.
After 2 years of teaching high school, Matt traveled to Japan to study under renowned bonsai master Kunio Kobayashi. It was during that time that Matt worked closely with Mr. Kobayashi and Peter Warren, who was the Senpai (head apprentice) of Shunkean, Mr. Kobayashi's bonsai museum.
Since his return two years ago at the age of 24, Matt has appeared before nearly 20 bonsai clubs where he has conducted lectures and demonstrations, and judged several bonsai shows. Matt continues to share his passion for trident maples throughout the U.S.
Matt has won several awards with his trident maples, which he grows from seedlings
